Bringing Dogs, Cats, Ferrets, and Other Domestic Pets into Austria from Third Countries as a Tourist

Domestic Pets

The following fall under the category of domestic pets: dogs, cats, ferrets, invertebrates (with the exception of bees and crustaceans), tropical fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds (except fowls), as well as rodents, and rabbits whose owner (or other person appointed by the owner) accompanies the animals and is held responsible for them during travel, and which are not the object for sale nor are intended to be given away.

A maximum of five animals per person are allowed to accompany the person traveling.

Apart from dogs, cats, and ferrets accompanying persons from third countries to the EU must have identification papers and a veterinary certificate. Requirements for each animal:

  • Every animal must be marked either with a clear and recognizable tattoo or with a microchip.
  • Every animal accompanying a traveler must have identification papers issued by an official, licensed veterinarian in which is stated that, in accordance to the recommendations of laboratory manufacturers, the animal has been vaccinated against rabies (with an inactivated vaccine containing coefficient at least an international antigen, WHO Standard) or as the case may be, the animal has received a renewed rabies vaccination.
  • Each individual animal must have a veterinary certificate as specified by the decision concluded by the Commission 2004/203/EG. This certificate must be completed in German or English by a responsible authority.

When bringing in dogs, cats, and ferrets originating from a third country not subject to the regulations mentioned, one must concluded as follows: Titration of neutralized antibodies in a sample of at least 0.5 IE/ml taken by an authorized veterinarian at least thirty days following the vaccination and three months prior to bringing in the animal. This procedure needs not to be repeated in a domestic pet receiving a renewed vaccination within the designated time intervals.

Re-entry of Animals

In the case of an animal re-entering the country, the animal must have identification papers (vaccination passport with expiration dated July 2005 at the latest or domestic pet certificate) in which the antibody titration is recorded.

The time limit of three months is not valid for re-entry of a domestic pet whose passport reveals, that the titration shows positive results before this animal has left EU territory.

Third Countries, for which the Regulations are Valid

When bringing in dogs, cats, and ferrets originating from one of the countries mentioned below, one need not to present a veterinary certificate (certification not necessary) indicating determination of titer:

Andorra, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Vatican City, Ascension, Antigua and Barbuda, Dutch Antilles, Australia, Aruba, Barbados, Bahrain, Bermuda, Canada, Fiji, Falkland Islands, Croatia, Jamaica, Japan, St. Kitts and Nevis, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Mauritius, New Caledonia, New Zealand, French Polynesia, St. Pierre and Miquelon, Singapore, St. Helena, United States of America, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna, and Mayotte.
Re-entry

Each individual animal must have identification papers when re-entering the country (vaccination passport with expiration date of July 2005 at the latest, or domestic pet identification papers.)

The regulation that a maximum number of five animals per person allowed to be brought into the country does not apply to the countries of Andorra, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, and Vatican City. These countries are also allowed to use the domestic pet identification papers when entering the EU if they so wish.
